Trauma Therapy Using EMDR

CONTACT US

What is EMDR?

You may have heard and seen EMDR before as doing the "eye thing." Yes. EMDR is doing the "eye thing" to help with past traumas and those diagnosed with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). What is the best way to sum up the purpose of EMDR? It is to heal the brain. EMDR involves using bilateral stimulations and asking the client to bring up the disturbing image, the negative feelings and thoughts associated with that event, and the sensations one may feel on their body.

What Makes EMDR Different?

EMDR differs from traditional talk therapy as there is little talking during sessions. Some people may say that they do not remember much about the traumatic event/s and think this may be a barrier to performing EMDR.

EMDR does not make someone forget the event/s but instead helps the person no longer be disturbed by the image/s or the events. One session of EMDR equates to eight sessions of traditional talk therapy.

Evidence-Based Treatment

Besides using EMDR for trauma, it has been effective with people suffering from depression, anxiety, phobias, low self-esteem, grief and loss, and chronic pain.

Due to its effectiveness, well-known public figures such as Prince Harry and Sandra Bullock have utilized EMDR to help heal from their traumas.

Is EMDR Suitable for You?

Besides big "T" traumas (witnessing violence or being involved in a life-threatening situation), EMDR also focuses on the little "t" traumas. These types of traumas may be seen as little traumas, but to you, they were big enough that they shaped and impacted you. Maybe it was something said to you by someone with authority (parent, boss, teacher) that made you feel unworthy, or you were told that you were never good enough, pretty enough, or smart enough.

These words have stayed with you, in which you genuinely believe in these negative thoughts and beliefs. This has prevented you from making progress and feeling stuck. EMDR can help with the little t's as we work on the positive thoughts and feelings you want to embrace as you move forward.
