Clinical Supervision

Being a social worker is not easy. It’s one of the toughest jobs that you’ll ever do and yet here you are putting in all that time, effort, and investment in making a career for yourself in this field. You’re juggling multiple roles and responsibilities to make all of this happen. Life is hard enough. You know what shouldn’t be hard? Obtaining your clinical supervision hours. At Your Own Pathway Therapy, we know how stressful and demanding this time in your life can be. Clinical supervision shouldn't be hard, it shouldn’t drain you, and it certainly shouldn’t cause you more trauma!

Unfortunately, that has not been the scenario for others who have gone through this journey. You know what’s even harder? When you’re a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Person of Color) social worker and you’re the only one in your agency. This can feel isolating, lonely, and even at times, dismissal when you voice your opinions and experiences but do not feel heard. Creating a safe place is essential in order for you to grow, be challenged, and strive to be a skilled social worker.

Clinical Supervision is Usually a Side Gig for Many Fully Licensed Social Workers

Here, at Your Own Pathway Therapy, clinical supervision is not a side gig. This is a service offering that demands attention and quality service. As a supervisee, you will be given the utmost support as you make the investment in your learning and growth that will better prepare you for your professional journey. To maximize the group and build relationships with group members, groups will have a maximum of 5 members that will meet bi-weekly for four hours per month. Individual supervision is also offered with the option to meet weekly or two hours a week with a biweekly schedule.

Supervision is a long-term commitment that could take between two to four years (or longer) depending on your work and life situation. It is essential that you and your clinical supervisor are a good fit for one another. Prior to either joining a group or individual supervision, a consultation will be conducted for both the supervisee and the supervisor to get to know one another and for the supervisee to ask questions and expectations of the group.

Is Receiving Supervision at Your Own Pathway Therapy the Right Fit for You?

Great question! Poiab Vue, LICSW, who is the founder, began her social work career in 2008 has worked in diverse settings to include hospitals (discharge planning, renal, and palliative care) also has experienced in working with the federal government by working with the Veterans Affairs (VA) Hospitals in Madison and Tomah, WI and Minneapolis, MN.

She has also had the opportunity to do case management work by working with clients who have been diagnosed with serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI) that were involved with Adult Rehabilitative Mental Health Services (ARMHS). Lastly, Poiab’s clinical training and background in diagnosing and mental health were completed at a community mental health center and also at a private group practice. In September of 2022, she decided to take a leap and open her own private practice. Her goal in taking this path is not only to help clients but also to be a mentor to other social workers who may want to take the unconventional route by encouraging them that entrepreneurship and other social worker roles in non-traditional settings are an option.
